Sports

building good habits, confidence, and discipline

Sports

Physical activity always stimulates a person’s confidence, self-esteem and mental alertness. At Dominican Convent, we believe that games and sports are an integral part of a student’s life, as these have a positive effect on their studies as well as their physical and mental fitness. Sports creates a team environment and enables mutual respect amongst the girls. Our endeavour as a school is to equip every student with relevant skills and fitness. The Dominican Convent offers a wide range of sporting activities, all of which have qualified, highly skilled and experienced coaches, who are able to handle pupils in a professional manner. Our sporting facilities afford all pupils the opportunity to participate in sport regardless of their abilities.

Athletics

This is a fairly new sport in the school, done in the first term. Students participate in both track and field events, including cross country. Inter-house and Inter-school competitions are held, as well as District Championships.

Basketball

Basketball is one of the sports available for girls of all ages. Two teams per age group play in the Schools league. The 1st Team travels to South Africa on an annual basis to play in tournaments there.

Dance

This is done in conjunction with St Georges both on a social and competitive basis. The girls and their partners are encouraged to enter the competitions run by the Dance Sport Society in Harare.

Gymnastics

This sport is done both on a social and competitive basis with the more talented girls being encouraged to participate in the competitions run by Zimbabwe Gymnastics.

Golf

The Zimbabwe Golf Union offers weekly golf lessons and several girls go out on Fridays for practice. They participate in the Inter-Schools competitions as well as club competitions in Harare.

Indoor Hockey

Indoor Hockey is played in the first term where four teams of mixed ages play in the League and Knockout Tournaments.

Field Hockey

Field Hockey is played in the second term with A and B Teams in each age group participating in the schools league.

Karate

Dubbed the DC Wolves, the award-winning karate team is one of the most active amongst the school sporting teams. The girls regularly participate in tournaments, including the African Youth Games and Zone 6 championships.

Rugby

The girls have two practices a week and play a few friendly 7’s matches during the second term.

Soccer

The school fields two teams of mixed age groups who play other schools both in the league and in friendly matches during both the first and second terms.

Squash

The Schools League is played in the first and second term and Convent enters three teams in the different leagues. These teams are based on ability rather than ages. The third term is used for internal competitions and friendly matches against any schools available.

Swimming

The school runs two swimming teams who compete in the A and B Inter-Schools competitions in the first and third terms. Social swimming is also offered for those who enjoy swimming but do not want to compete.

Tennis

All age groups play tennis with A and B teams in each age group. It is played mainly in the 1st and 3rd Terms.

Our Mission

The Dominican Convent, following a tradition that dates back to St Dominic, who desired the salvation of all people, is committed to the education and development of the whole person, spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, physically, morally and socially.

Our Vision

To be the leading multi-cultural Catholic Girls’ school in the region that offers a sound holistic education and a first-rate operational climate for pupils, staff and parents in an environmentally friendly atmosphere.
